In the Methodists, Episcopalians, and Lutherans there are an alternative versions of some hymns. These alternate versions are called Hymnals. The Methodist Hymnal is a collection of sacred vocal music in English from different eras and situations in the life of Christ. It was compiled in 1886 by a committee of church leaders to provide a comprehensive compilation for use across all Methodist churches. The Lutheran Book of Worship was published in 1978 and is used liturgically by Lutherans around the world today. All hymns are translated directly from the original German hymnals, with the exception of one English translation of "A Mighty Fortress is Our God."All these hymnals are available at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, bn.com and library.cafepress.com Methodist Hymnal (1887) (includes all of Series I and some Series II). Methodist Worship (1985) (includes all of Series II) Church Hymnary (1917) (incomplete; part I of III). Lutheran Book of Worship (1978) (includes all of Series I, part of II, and some IIa). The Hymnal 1982 offers an inclusive collection that includes culture songs from Africa, Asia, the Americas, the Caribbean Islands and Oceania. The Hymnal also, wherever possible, includes hymns of historical importance. The Hymnal 1982 is available for private and public worship in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The full music of all hymns is printed in bold face at the head of every page of this two-volume hymnal (Volume 1 has fifty-four pages of music, Volume 2 has fifty pages). In addition to the music there are two major features for this hymnal:The words to these melodies are printed in "lyric", large type, immediately beneath the melody. To assist the reader even more, there are short chord symbols above each lyric.The Hymnal 1982 is available as a hardcover book, as a songbook, as a set of three compact discs and as an online searchable database updated frequently. Including the words to the favorite hymns of John Wesley from 1700 to 1781 from which many Methodist Hymnals have been published. The United Methodist Hymnal is currently in process with two volumes published in 1996 and two in 2000.
